After you pass

A car on a UK motorway at golden hour

Passing your test is the start of driving on your own. The first couple of years are when new drivers are most at risk, so it's worth building experience deliberately.

The two-year rule

If you get 6 or more penalty points within two years of passing your test, your licence is revoked. You then have to apply for a new provisional licence and pass both the theory and practical tests again. Details are on GOV.UK: penalty points for new drivers.

Pass Plus

Pass Plus is an optional DVSA course for new drivers, taught by an approved driving instructor. It covers driving in town, in all weathers, on rural roads, at night, on dual carriageways and on motorways. There's no test at the end; you're assessed as you go. Some insurers may offer a discount for it, so check with yours. More at GOV.UK: Pass Plus.

Motorway confidence

Learners can take motorway lessons with an approved instructor in a dual-controlled car, but many people still pass without much motorway experience. A lesson or two after passing is a good way to practise joining, lane discipline and leaving safely.
