Eligibility Requirements

Before you can start training to become a driving instructor in the UK, there are certain legal and personal requirements you must meet:

  • You must be at least 21 years old.

  • You must have held a full UK or EU driving licence for at least three years.

  • You must have fewer than six points on your driving licence.

  • You must pass an enhanced DBS (criminal record) check.

  • You must have good eyesight that meets the minimum requirements for driving.

Steps to Becoming a Qualified Driving Instructor

The process of becoming a DVSA-approved driving instructor involves structured training and assessments to ensure you have the skills and knowledge to teach others effectively. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

 

Apply for a DBS Check

You will need an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to prove you are suitable to work with the public.

Register with the DVSA

Once your DBS check is complete, you can apply to become a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI) by registering with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

Complete the ADI Qualification Tests

To become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), you must pass the Theory Test,Theory Test and Instructional Ability Test

Optional: Apply for a Trainee Licence (PDI Badge)

After passing your Part 2 test, you may be eligible to apply for a trainee licence, known as a PDI badge. This allows you to gain real-world teaching experience under supervision while preparing for your Part 3 test.

How Long Does It Take?

The time required to become a driving instructor varies depending on your availability, training provider, and how quickly you pass each stage. On average, most people complete the process within 6 to 12 months.
